It will soon be time to say goodbye from Simon, Charlie & some of the team. After almost two years, we are gutted to announce that we will be leaving the Derwent Arms in the New Year. A date hasn’t been confirmed however it’s also imperative the right people are found to take the pub over after us. All bookings etc are still as normal, nothing will change. However the only thing that will be paused for now is the motorhome/campervan stopovers- new managers will take this on if they feel like it’s something they want to continue to offer. We’ve poured our hearts and souls into this place and as a small business with a lot of input & support from our family, it’s time to step back and enjoy some time with them. The Derwent has been more than just a pub to us, it’s been our home, our passion, and most of all your community hub. Sadly, the work/life balance is now taking its toll on us both physically & mentally- along with the forever rising costs and mounting financial pressures too Since April 1st, our overheads and costs have soared, driven by changes brought in by a government that feels completely out of touch with the realities of small, independent businesses like ours. We’ve done everything we can, and with the new budget released just over two weeks ago we’ve done a predicted calculation for our next financial year, but the numbers just don’t add up anymore. The wage increase, the VAT, the other taxes and so on are just going to cripple business like us eventually. To every single one of you who simply walked through our doors for a pint, shared a meal, brought your loved ones, celebrated a milestones, or just passed on your support to us for what we’ve done, thank you. Your kindness, loyalty, and love has meant more than you’ll ever know & is keeping us going whilst the times are hard. We’ve made memories that will stay with us for a lifetime, and we’re so proud of what we built with you by our side. If there’s one thing we ask as we say start to say goodbye to people that came as customers but are now good friends, it’s this: please continue to support your local businesses. They are the heart & backbone of the community, and right now, they need you more than ever. Mixed emotions don’t really sum up how we currently feel but this is the right time for us to do this- both for us personally & professionally.
